Out of Milan to the shore of Lake Maggiore at Feriolo, then north along the lake past Locarno into Switzerland and up the Ticino valley to Andermatt, at the foot of four of the great Swiss passes. Around 257 km.

Day 3 Andermatt – Furka – Grimsel – Susten – Oberalp – Splügen – Chiavenna

The big Swiss day. A loop over the Furka (2,429 m), the Grimsel and the Susten, back through Andermatt and over the Oberalp, then east past Disentis and Flims to the Splügen Pass and down its hairpins to Chiavenna in Italy. Around 287 km.

Day 4 Chiavenna – Aprica – Gavia – Bormio – Livigno

Day 5 Livigno loop: Bernina – St. Moritz – Davos – Flüela

A loop through the Swiss Engadine: the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz, through the Albula valley to Davos, over the Flüela Pass and through the Swiss National Park, then back to Livigno through the Munt la Schera tunnel. Around 181 km.

Day 6 Livigno – Stelvio – Reschen – Garmisch – Innsbruck

What to Expect

Expect the classic Alpine passes back to back: long switchback climbs, high mountain scenery and coffee stops in four countries. Days are planned at around 180–310 km, with a rest day in Innsbruck halfway through.

The highest passes, including the Stelvio, the Gavia and the Grossglockner, are open in summer, so we run this tour from late June to September, on the dates that suit you.
