Riding the N-260: The Pyrenees Motorcycle Road Guide

The N-260 is the road riders mean when they talk about crossing the Spanish Pyrenees. Known as the Eje Pirenaico, or Pyrenean axis, it runs along the southern side of the range from the French border near Portbou to Sabiñánigo in Aragón, linking valleys, gorges and mountain passes that no motorway ever will. It is also the road at the heart of our Pyrenees Escape, a two-day motorcycle tour from Barcelona that never touches a motorway.

This guide covers the sections of the N-260 worth riding, the passes and gorges along the way, when to go, and how to fit the best of it into a weekend.

Motorcycle on a winding mountain road in the Spanish Pyrenees

The N-260 at a glance

  • Name: N-260, the Eje Pirenaico (Pyrenean axis)
  • Route: from the French border near Portbou through Figueres, Olot, Puigcerdà, La Seu d’Urgell, Sort, La Pobla de Segur, El Pont de Suert, Castejón de Sos, Aínsa and Broto to Sabiñánigo
  • Regions: Catalonia and Aragón
  • Highest pass on the road: Port del Cantó, 1,725 m
  • Best riding: the mountain section between La Seu d’Urgell and Sabiñánigo
  • Season: May to October; the high passes can see snow and ice outside that window

Which sections are worth riding

Not all of the N-260 is equal. In the east, between Figueres and Olot, much of it has been or is being upgraded to the A-26 dual carriageway, so it rides like any other main road. The character changes once you reach the mountains. From the Cerdanya valley westwards, the N-260 becomes the road its reputation is built on: long climbs, tight valley sections and very few straight lines.

Coming from Barcelona, the natural way in is the Collada de Toses (1,800 m) on the N-152 between Ripoll and Puigcerdà, one of the best climbs in Catalonia in its own right.

La Seu d’Urgell to Sort: Port del Cantó

The Port del Cantó (1,725 m) is the highest pass on the N-260 and the stretch most riders remember. From La Seu d’Urgell the road climbs through pine forest in long, flowing bends, then drops into the Noguera Pallaresa valley at Sort, the white-water capital of the Pyrenees. The views open up near the top and the bends are well sighted, so it rewards a smooth rhythm more than speed.

Sort to La Pobla de Segur: the Collegats gorge

South of Sort, the road follows the Noguera Pallaresa river into the Congost de Collegats, a narrow limestone gorge with sheer walls and short tunnels. It is a brief section, but one of the most dramatic on the whole road.

La Pobla de Segur to El Pont de Suert: Coll de Perves

West of La Pobla, the N-260 climbs over the Coll de Creu de Perves (1,325 m), a quieter pass with wide views across the Pallars. El Pont de Suert, at the bottom, is the gateway to the Vall de Boí and its UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches, a worthwhile detour if you have the time.

El Pont de Suert to Castejón de Sos: Coll de Espina and Coll de Fadas

Crossing into Aragón, the road climbs twice in quick succession, over the Coll de Espina (1,407 m) and the Coll de Fadas (1,470 m), with tight bends on both sides. It then drops into the Ésera valley at Castejón de Sos, beneath the Posets and Aneto massifs, the highest mountains in the Pyrenees.

Castejón de Sos to Aínsa: Congosto de Ventamillo

South of Castejón, the N-260 squeezes through the Congosto de Ventamillo, a narrow gorge carved by the Ésera, before continuing to Campo and over the Collado de Foradada (1,020 m) to Aínsa. Aínsa’s medieval old town, on a ridge above the meeting of two rivers, is one of the best lunch stops in the Pyrenees.

Aínsa to Sabiñánigo: Broto and Cotefablo

The final stretch follows the Ara valley through Fiscal and Broto, the southern gateway to the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, then crosses the Puerto de Cotefablo (1,425 m) to Biescas and Sabiñánigo. The section from Fiscal to Broto is older and narrower, with rougher surfaces, so take it steady.

Riding the N-260 in a weekend from Barcelona

The N-260 is long, but you don’t need a week to ride the best of it. Our Pyrenees Escape fits it into two days and around 550 km from Barcelona:

  • Day 1: head north into the Pyrenees on quiet, twisty roads with sweeping curves and little traffic, stopping at local biker bars along the way.
  • Day 2: ride the N-260 itself, around five hours in the saddle through the mountains and valleys, before heading back to Barcelona.

The route avoids motorways completely and also takes in a lesser-known road we rate even higher than the N-260. We keep that one for riders on the tour.

When to ride the N-260

The best months are May, June, September and early October. The passes are clear of snow, the valleys are comfortable and traffic is light outside the school holidays. July and August are good for riding too, as the mountains stay cooler than the coast, but expect more campervans and cyclists on the passes and frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

From November to April the higher passes can be icy or snow-covered, especially early in the morning and on shaded bends. Check the forecast from AEMET, Spain’s weather agency, the night before, and road conditions from the DGT, the national traffic authority.

Tips for riding the N-260

  • Fuel: fill up whenever you pass through a town such as La Seu d’Urgell, Sort, La Pobla de Segur, El Pont de Suert, Castejón de Sos or Aínsa. Some stretches between them have nothing.
  • Traffic: the N-260 is a working road. Expect lorries on the climbs, tractors in the valleys and livestock on the higher sections.
  • Surfaces: generally good on the passes and rougher in the older gorge sections. Watch for gravel on the inside of hairpins, especially after rain.
  • Pace: distances look short on a map, but average speeds are low. Plan on 50 to 60 km/h including stops.
  • Speed limits: 90 km/h on conventional roads unless signed otherwise, and much lower through villages, where speed cameras are common.
  • Lunch: Aínsa, Sort and El Pont de Suert all have good, unhurried restaurants, and many serve a fixed-price menú del día on weekdays.

  • Collada de Toses (1,800 m) on the N-152 between Ripoll and Puigcerdà.
  • Portalet (1,794 m) on the A-136, north from Biescas through the Tena valley into France.
  • Col du Tourmalet (2,115 m) and Col d’Aubisque on the French side, both classics of the Tour de France.
